As I recall, the register-of-all-transactions was incorrectly called
General Ledger in 2.6.19, the first GC version I used. It was changed to
General Journal some time between that version and 4.14. And in 4.14,
the filter for a different date range than the default 30 days can be
made persistent. (2.6.19 had a Save Filter button, but it didn't work in
this context.)

And to be clear, we're talking about the General Journal (formerly
General Ledger) menu selection under Tools. There are also General
Journal and General Ledger reports, in the Assets & Liabilities section
of the Reports menu. As the names imply, the General Journal is
organized by date and the General Ledger by account.
