Julie,

One easy way to limit autocomplete is to filter a single account register by a 
relatively small number of days. For example, 60 days might cover your data 
entry.

View -> Filter by... -> Show Number of Days

On the other side, if you want maximum expansion, use the General Journal with 
all transactions.
