My bad there - indeed that preference setting accepts folder and actually only folder. But that setting is limited to specifying a single folder in the tree. You are correct that it doesn't have to be root of any drive but having it set to the root of the drive, I can move my data files tree to different drive or restore it to somewhere else, update that to new drive's root folder and all the document links work automagically again.
My overall use case is rather a bit "out-of-the-box". My first use case is that I have created an asset type account called "documents" which then has zero dollar entries pointing to important scanned documents -- like deed for real estate holdings, title for cars, legal and estate documents, etc. This is where "Link File" works fine. My second such use case is that my investment account hierarchy is setup with like for example Fideler-IRA as the parent and then a single zero dollar entry in that register that has "Linked Location" with all of the pertinent statements for that particular account. Then when I deposit latest one in the actual folder location, I reconcile that account. The reconcile date helps me keep track of what account was last reviewed and when. Rinse and repeat for others in similar fashion. This is where "Link Location" works fine. Come to think of it, changing the date for that single zero dollar entry can also serve that purpose. -----Original Message----- From: Adrien Monteleone <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 28, 2026 5:17 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GNC] Transaction Linked Document - acceptable Linked Location values The preference setting does indeed let you specify a folder, that's the point. It doesn't have to be root of any drive. It can be anywhere in the tree. But now I see you want, on a particular transaction, to specify a location rather than a single file. Though I'm not sure I grasp the utility since you can specify a path in preferences. Individual transactions get a specific file you can view, without having to hunt for it.
