of course that didn't work. I did find the application file by searching for gnucash from my home directory. Just for kicks I double clicked and it started to go through the installation process. As before I only have the option to install translation files and account template files. I opted for a shortcut on my desktop and that is where I get the messages regarding the unfound entry point.
