When we tell GnuCash to not save a filter and there is an existing saved

This can be confirmed by viewing the gcm file.  The committed filter
changes will persist for the session.

what if there was a filter previously set with the Saved Filter box
ticked? When the user sets up a filter with that box not ticked, at the
end of the session is the previous saved filter restored, or the default
filter? I hope it's the previous saved filter filter, because throwing
that saved filter away and reverting to the default would seem like a
bug to me.

The previously saved filter is removed if the "Filter by..." window is OK'd without the "Save Filter" box checked. At the end of the session, the register change is committed to the gcm file without a filter. When the session is restarted, the gcm file is reloaded and the register will use the default filter.

This appears to be the intended mechanism provided to allow us to remove a previously saved register filter - to restore the use of the default register filter when the session reopens - while maintaining the existing register filter for the current session.

Sherlock
