Deva, There's nothing wrong with transferring directly from one (non-currency) commodity to another. This is akin to a stock spinoff.
For the record, if a transaction with multiple commodities (e.g., transferring dollars to euros) gets copied and you change the amount, GnuCash pops up the exchange rate dialog, and you get the chance to fix the numbers. However, it seems that the necessary exchange rate dialog doesn't trigger when creating the transaction between two non-currency commodities. You can't even call up the exchange rate dialog at all; GnuCash claims that the commodity doesn't support exchange rates. So, there's some underlying logic that GnuCash applies to these transactions. The simple short term fix is to open the transaction in the destination register, edit the number of shares, and accept the new price that GnuCash proposes. The followup is to file a bug report for future consideration. David T.
