If 'by class' you mean dimensional reporting, a la 'tags' then I can say there is more than a reasonable use case for this report. Folks are having to shoe-horn adulterations of their account tree just for this case, or else having to run several Transaction Reports and combining them in a spreadsheet for the same effect. (for various uses and purposes) The ability to filter transactions included on the Income Statement/P&L would likely be very welcome among a not-so-small batch of users.

In the short term, consider looking into the Python bindings and Piecash. (or switching to one of the SQL backends as Wm mentioned and going that route) The bonus for the SQL route is that one day, some day, GnuCash will be a proper db app, and that SQL-based report could just slide right in with maybe minor modification.

Adrien

The report I want is comparable to the Profit and Loss by Class report

be a useful addition to GnuCash.
