I got it to compile and run, thanks for the info.

In case it helps, this command did not work:
sudo sed -i "s/^# deb-src/deb-src/" /etc/apt/sources.list

Instead, I had to edit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu.sources
and add deb-src to the end of the two lines which had this:
Types: deb
