This is super-interesting, and I'm grateful to Dr. Figueiredo for
undertaking this exercise - probably he's the only one who could do it -
because it's certainly extremely useful to track, monitor and continually
test even the most well-meaning and state-of-the-art modern historiography
for its blind spots.

No one can say whether we're going to perceive some kind of middle ground
to accommodate both Dr. Figueiredo's assertions and how we are currently
enjoined to understand the colonial period. But even at first glance, it
seems likely this discussion will again return to the fundamental paradox
of Goa's colonial history, which underlines so.much of our culture and is
also the fulcrum of Angela Barretto Xavier's stellar 2022 'Religion &
Empire in Portuguese India' - the best history book of the Goans. That is:
at some point, significant numbers of significant Goans stopped seeing
themselves as colonials, or inferiors in any way to the Europeans, and they
built their new Goan culture predicated on that knowledge and understanding.

How that happened, we can't yet be very clear. But it did happen, and the
phenomenon was real, which complicates our history - and the related
historiography - in ways that have not been addressed satisfactorily yet.
