Thank you very much for essay and indeed your unique perspective. Now, there is
something I need to clarify, which has just clicked into place for me.
My question is, did all the doctors who graduated from Escola Medica
automatically become part of the military corps and did they all bear the
designation of 'military surgeon.' At Grant, for instance, most went into
civilian practice, and those absorbed by the military were given the title of
assistant-surgeon and an additional military rank. There was also the title of
sub-assistant surgeon who were taken mostly from the apothecary department, but
if they set up private practice, they could practice as doctors.
Would appreciate you input. The Goan doctors that went to British East Africa
were from both Grant and Escola, but I realise now with your input their titles
upon graduation were different in both cases.
