| His father, João António Valeriano Coutinho, from Aldona, was a graduate of Escola Médica and a public health officer in Cabo Verde. Like Dr. Socrates da Costa, he protested against certain injustices committed against Goan doctors. His sister, Maria Luisa de Sequeira Coutinho, was an accomplished pianist and writer. It is not correct that he never returned to India. After he was settled and successful in the US he visited Goa and gave a lecture at the Instituto Vasco da Gama. I was a child, then, and cannot recall the topic, but I remember the lecture was well received and made the headlines of some of the local papers. Much later I met him in the US when we were both in Washington. He was a polyglot and he showed me his great collection of books on the history, language, and literature of Portugal. A real gentleman and scholar. I did not know about his political past and we never discussed politics. Not much has been written about this distinguished son of Goa. Aleixo Manuel da Costa mentions his sister, but not him, in his encyclopedia “Dicionário de Literatura Goesa”.
