Fred,
I have checked that website www.10times.com<http://www.10times.com/>
It is based in India and anybody can just link a social media account or create
an account with them, with zero checks, and create an event.
Just ridiculous, no checks of any type are done. So it appears to be some fake
entries in there.
The Covid conference shows as 500 people expected to attend 'from previous
years estimates'.
Did you guys ever had a similar covid-19 event in Goa before with 500 delegates
from all over the world attending? Is there any venue for this kind of figure
in Goa?
So, to test it, I have created an event for the 25th November called the
'International conference of the spoon licking society', where I assume more
than 1500 members worldwide are expected to attend, where they will need to
bring their own favourite spoon to lick.
It will be a blast! 🙂
Because that website has high paid Google search index, it will appear right on
top of any related search.
Fake data generated on such spurious events will inflate hotel booking prices,
flight prices, etc. which is bad, as one is creating an artificial 'demand' for
Goa tourism. Hence, anybody who genuinely wants to go to Goa at those times,
they will face higher rates on everything they try to book.
I am not sure who is behind this scam, but no prizes to guess which industries
will benefit from this.
Will check if anybody will contact me or if the designated venue might tell me
off.
Tried to do the venue at your house, but they only accept their pre-defined
establishments.
Will delete it shortly.
Thanks,
JP

Subject: [GRN] Re: Upcoming conferences in Goa (November 2023)?

A friend wrote back to me off-list: "OMG! Didn't know Goa had become such a
conference hub. It was not like that in the years I visited.... It surely makes
up for lost foreign tourists, while visitors are probably in the demographics
eyed by the government..."

When initially posted, I did comment: "There seems to be a lot getting
announced for Goa this month. Are these legit events?" Am still not sure if
these are genuine events. Some seem to be announcing tiny hotels as their
venues (couldn't go through the entire list). If anyone has pointers on this,
kindly share... Either way, it's a story :-)
