One thing I am happy about the Konkani issue on this forum is that it made me check up on books and read them after a very long, long time. I found a booklet, Konkani Orthography in Roman Script, published by the Dalgado Konknni Akademi, Panaji, in 1988. It says, "This booklet of rules and principles is prepared by a special committee appointed by the Dalgado Konknni Akademi. Dr. Mathew Almedia, S.J.,secretary, Mr. Felicio Cardoso, Fr. Moreno de Souza, S.J., Fr. Kyriel D'Souza, S.J., Fr. Anastasio Gomes, O.C.D., Fr. Freddy J. da Costa.
It has 13-page letter-size. Here the introduction: "The first question you will ask is: 'Why is this written in English?' It is more important to understand the system of spellng and to put it into practice when writing Konkani, than to insist on the way it is presented. Most of the Konkani writers know English very well, but they do not know all the Konkani grammatical terms in Konkani. This piece could very well be written in Konkani, but it is far more important that the writers understand the principles and rules of writing before they can put them into practice. "Most of the things present here are already pracitsed by most Konkani writers. This document tries to put together the existing principles and rules in some sort of order with the intention of bringing about a desirable unity among the writers. A uniform, readable and simple system of writing Konkani in the Roman script is the need of the moment to preserve and extend the achievements of Goan Konkani writers."
