Hi Roland On Goanet, you will find my longish article on Goan Dance Bands of Yesteryear which came out about two or three years ago when Artie Shaw, the superb musician and danceband leader died at 98 in America. Should you want to read it, I will transmit the updated version to you privately if you let me have your email address.
I had something to say about significant quantities of the gold amber being freely passed on to the musicians, far in excess of consumption possibilities! The excess amount often got supplied to the bourganvillia growing in large pots close to the stage! Far from generating yellowish flowers because of this, they did very well on the beer and produced the best red flowers one could want! In my experience, the generous drinks tended to flow to the musicians in appreciation of well chosen pieces. Apart from several tricks of the trade, the secret was always to sense exactly what tunes and rhythms the audience wanted at different times of the long dances which often ended when the sun rose early in the morning! However, I honestly can't recall getting drinks to promote better playing/performing but I am sure you are right that this did happen from time to time. Cornel PS Thanks for info about Johnson and his Jolly Boys about whom I was not aware. I had also referred in my piece to the transition from mainly wind instruments to electrified music on guitars etc. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roland Francis" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Goanet" <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, October 15, 2006 7:50 PM Subject: [Goanet] A Tribute To Goan Bands > Johnson (Joaozinho) and his Jolly Boys undisputedly held the music stage > in Goa for many years - pre-Potuguese as well as after 1961. > > Here was Goan dance music at it's most entertaining.
