Dear Ancy D'Souza
When On 23rd August, 2008 Swami Laxmanand Saraswati a grand old man of 85 years
who was working against conversions amongst tribals in the undivided Phulbani
district of Orissawas shot dead alongwith a minor and woman at an Ashram for
girls in the Kandhamal district of Orissa on the eve of Janamashtami
celebrations no one on Goanet condemned his killing.
The day after the murder not a single TV Channel or National English daily
considered the news of this cold blooded murder important enough to be breaking
news or front page material. Not one reporter ascertained the obvious
maoist-missionary link up in Orissa which many suspect is prevalent in several
other parts of the country as well. Conversions may be debatable but allying
with enemies of the state is more than disturbing, for it is criminal and anti
national.
Right from Vivekananda and Aurobindo to Gandhiji and Ambedkar (excepting Nehru,
Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi!) all our national leaders have
condemned religious conversions unequivocally and it is the bounden duty of the
minorities to respect and adhere not only to their views but also to the letter
and spirit of the Constitution. They cannot take advantage of the "tolerance’
shown by the majority community.
The secular media reported Hindu fundamentalists attacking churches in Orissa.
What they suppressed for obvious reasons was the deadly attack on Laxmananda
Saraswati being orchestrated by Christian fundamentalists believed to be
backed by Congress Rajya Sabha Member and World Vision chief Radha Kant Nayak.
In Orissa, these Christian missionaries, have been disturbing peace in the
region by first fraudulently converting tribals by economic enticement, then
forcing neo converts to eat beef, setting scores of temples on fire,
encouraging Kandh tribals to indulge in deforestation with the local mafia
using the false propaganda that the trees are doomed by the lord.
The murder of Laxmananda Saraswati had only evoked strong counter attacks by
the Hindus which at some places turned violent. Unfortunately, for some
baffling reasons the news media chose to report a complete distorted one sided
story of Christian persecution at the hands of so called Hindu fundamentalists
Our media have given a clean chit to missionaries by blaming the Maoists
without even informing the readers of the several previously unsuccessful
attempts on Laxmananda Saraswati’s life by Christian fanatics. The police have
arrested one Pradesh Kumar Das an employee of the World Vision, a Christian
Charity, from Khadagpur while escaping from the district at Buguda. In another
drive, two other persons Vikram Digal and William Digal have been arrested from
the house of Lal Digal, a local militant Christian, from Nuasahi at Gunjibadi,
Nuagaan. They have admitted to having joined a group of 28 other assailants.
