I second Santosh Helekars observation that a Goan Hindu is Goan first and then
Hindu.
I came to live in Goa for the first time, 7 years ago, and am very impressed by
my Hindu bretheren's respect and tolerance of other religions. This is my
personal opinion, but to me
the Goan Hindu is far more tolerant and respectful of Christianity than
vice-versa. To the
Hindus, God is one and Christians and Muslims may have a different way of
worshiping the one God. I see more Hindus cross themselves respectfully when
passing a roadside
Catholic shrine,or cross or chapel or church than I see Catholics doing so. I
see more Hindus light candles and reverently place flowers at Catholic places
of worship than I see
Catholics doing so. This is true humanity. When someone dies in the village,
Catholics and Hindus alike pay their respects to the deceased, as we are all
like one family in the village, When there is a public issue in the village,
we all get together as one to discuss how to resolve the problem. Hindus
enthusiastically attend Catholic Ladainhas and Chapel or Church feasts. Thse
are some of the behaviours at the village level that makes living in
Goa such a unique and pleasurable experience.. Again, I concur with Santosh
that Hindu Goans are Goans first and foremost. Those who try to divide this
very unique unity of
Catholics and Hindus are despicable folks, seeking to foment trouble for their
own
nefarious purposes.
