COMMENT: While I cannot speak for the "rest of India", I can certainly attest to #1 (above) being the prevailing impression among most of the Indians esp North Indians I have come across. When I attend parties hosted by these folks, I intentionally turn down their offers of whiskey (usually something very gross like Red label JW, White Horse or VAT 69) or some very cheap red wine. And the reaction is uniformly (akin to) "Arre yaar, what kind of Gowan are you, You are not taking Hot Drinks?". I find it much opportune to have Club Soda on the rocks.
