I would love to see Gobo becoming: * stable - let even releases be focused on bug fixes and odd releases on new features. * hackable - keep solutions simple and plain, shellscripts and ascii, etc.. * usable - sane default solutions for everything a typical desktop wants. and personally, I'd very much like one ROX/GTK solution and one KDE/QT solution, they could be split as two alternative add-ons for a non-desktop base, and one could release these as separate live CD images. Regarding usability, here's some things that comes to mind: - bug free installation (goes under 'stability') - good hardware detection and support - nice list of "recommended" or default apps for common tasks - GUI frontends for admin tools - device handling (hal, dbus, pmount, ivman or rox's DeviceHandler) - printing (thanks lucas! =) I would gladly help out with a ROX/GTK alternative. regarding "good apps" I've made a list of my personal favorite apps listed by category: Audio/Music * Lilypond - music notation * XMMS - simple player (bad thing: gtk 1.x) * Quod Libet - music library manager * Audacity - wave editor * Traverso - multitrack audio workstation * Ardour - multitrack audio workstation * CDRDAO - cd audio burning * CDParanoia - hi-fi CD audio ripping * QaRecord - simple stereo recorder * KaConnect - ALSA seq connection * JACK - audio connection kit (used by other apps) * FluidSynth - soundfont player * Baudline - audio analyzer (spectrogram, scope, etc...) * GaMix - ALSA mixer * LAME - mp3 encoder * Flac - lossless audio encoder/decoder * Scala - microtonal utility * PureData - graphical dsp programming environment * ChucK - textual dsp programming environment * sox - cmdline soundfile processer and converter * Aqualung - nice audio player Media * GStreamer - patchable streaming multimedia framework * MPlayer - video and DVD player * Graveman - GUI frontend to burn/copy CD's and DVD's.
