I don't think the overhead will be too large.  The nice thing about
AJAX applications is that stuff gets done in small chunks so it
doesn't matter too much if it takes a little time to translate a few
sentences at a time.  The plus side, if I can get it to work, is that
it's an extremely cost effective (i.e. cheap) way of getting a multi-
language application without having to get each piece translated
separately into many languages.

I like your idea of surrounding stuff that shouldn't be translated
with an HTML tag, although that may well fall foul of the problem
reported in this forum about the translator moving the tags to a
different part of the text.  I also like the idea of doing some of the
common stuff up front.

I'll persevere with the approach for a few more days and then put
something in front of the native French and Russian speakers I have
access too and see what they think.
