All I mean is that different http implementations make different assumptions - particularly around threading and security. Finding one that works is not easy - the example I linked required hacking apache ftp client. Regarding GCE or GKE - You may have luck finding an open source application that slurps ftp files down and pushes them to gcs/s3 that you can containerise fairly trivially, otherwise you'll have to write something yourself.
