That's exactly what should happen.   The shortest distance between two
points on the globe does not appear straight on a projected map.  (but
"Moscow should always appear on the left"!)

Have a look at -

and
   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_circle

This is mapping, your Euclidean geometry 'nearest point' example
doesn't really apply.
