That is correct in order to at all zoom levels have features staying as you
say it on the right side of the line... it will appear curved on a Mercator
 projected map. ...

Geodesic is correct if you want them matching features all the way
along the path. Its also the only as the crows fly straight line
you need to study map projections this isnt an error excepting that
all the online maps chose one of the least useful projections
to put things in ;-) ie neither shapes nor distance appear wysiwyg

GIS folks like those at the EPSG had to be cajoled into even
including it ...
