no map should contain 2000 objects at once. there is one special map type for that, but it provides no suitable information to the reader, except "oh there are many points". but i want to make a suggestion: classify the states containig the objects (some excel statistics should do the trick). and create a choropleth map (you need the according state or county or whatever region geometry), in which you start with a slight yellow filling for 0-200 objects and so on. and if you select a particular region you can switch to marker presentation. i hope you know what i am trying to say, because i don't want to expain further (need my sleep now).
