In addition to all the OS bits.. I'd just like to add my voice to the plea for direct tile access - at least on mobile devices (I see virtual earth have released a web service allowing this)
I can see why the direct access of tiles may not be desirable from the desktop scenario - but on mobile devices we're a bit stuck at the moment. Google has produced a nice app for mobile - but there is no api onto this - so you can't extend or build on it. Web browsers on mobile devices are still not there yet - yes we can do simple things with googles static map service, but as others have said - that is already starting to look a bit dated.
