For the record -- a significant amount of the common applet performance gripes were cleared up in 6u10. I'm suprised that so many java developers know nothing about this release. This was a milestone for JavaFX to move forward -- since it was built on top of a lot of these improvements. If you don't mind JavaFX in the browser (it doesnt have to run as JNLP, by the way)-- then you probably won't mind using an applet -- because it is essentially running as an applet. As more people develop JavaFX applications, and it becomes more widespread, you will have a broader base of users who can also use applets.
