Of course I have tried it. But what I am trying to say is that gwt is ok like this. Its target are applications where stability is more important than look. Let's take yahoo mail and gmail for a comparison. The first has a better look than the latter, but I wouldn't use it as a substitute for thunderbird (I don't know if that would be possible). Gmail instead, has a design that is kinda flat, sometimes giving the sensation that I'm viewing an ol' plain html page and that inspires me stability. It doesn't involve the extra second needed to understand whether a certain element is clickable or not. What I am trying to say is that you don't have to write lots of painful css in order to get a kickass design and IMHO gwt suppose that you already know that.

If you need to build a website, then maybe you don't even need gwt. I built once a site using gwt and is a pain in the ass not because it doesn't have a cool default GUI style, but because I think it wasn't created for that.

P.S.:
Whether a framework has a cool default GUI style shouldn't be the main criteria for choosing it.

Regards,
Cristian.

You obviously haven't tried TabLayoutPanel.

They may be perfect for *you* right now, but I'm willing to bet that
for every one of you there are ten developers that skip GWT and go
with JQueryUI or ExtJS or Dojo because "my app will look better".
Most engineers don't have great CSS and design skills, don't
underestimate the draw of aesthetics.

An official competition to produce a new theme seems like a good idea.
Or Google could throw some money at an outside design firm.

I'll bet there is a ready market for some sort of commercial product
here, like GXT done right. I'd pay for something that looks good and
integrates well with GWT layouts.

The widgets are perfect how they are now. They fit perfectly in both
websites and enterprise applications. Besides, a fancy design is not always
a good design. I always use the simple "googlish" style in both websites and
web apps and the customers are very pleased with the results.

That maybe true but not all programmer are great visual designers not
to mention the time it takes to get it all looking great. All I am
saying is the default look should be much more visually appealing.
After all Google has spent a lot of time optimizing the javascript
ouput so why not put some more time into a high quality polished
visual look so that everyone benefits.

There is no need gwt widgets to be "beautiful". They are easy

Why not just use GXT then?

Couldn“t agree more.

GWT is great as whole and so flexible, it hurts.

Although, the core widgets could have a better visual appearance to
make them as good as Vaadin's or ext's but without the "desktop
application" appeal.

Hi

I think some of the most aesthetically pleasing UI components can be
found in extJS so I would like to suggest that GWT further improve the
visual appearance of their widgets.
