There is an app called youtube-dl which is available for debian (and should be in the ubuntu sources as well) Once you use this it should give you a flv file (flash video) Some video players (including VLC, I think, will play these saved flv's on your computer) Then (to go further), if you have the ffmpeg package installed (use synaptic to get it) you can run:
ffmpeg -i input.flv -ab 128 -ar 44100 -ac 2 -s 800x600 -target ntsc- dvd -aspect 4:3 output.mpg and it gives you a DVD-style (US NTSC) mpeg file, which you can collect in a directory and then use dvdauthor to author a dvd, use mkisofs to make an image, then growisofs to make a collection fo these on one DVD which will play on your TV dvd player. If you need help on these later commands to do the rest of the job, please post back. People use this method all the time.
