Well, I'm working with the final version of gOS 3 gadgets, and can't
enable compiz desktop effects.

I did all that was described above, so I installed compiz with gOS,
that is, I installed everything that seemed necessary, as its unclear
actually which packages are needed, and many seem related but have
vague functions, but I installed compiz, and all that came with it, I
removed xcompmgr from menu > Systems >preferences > sessions AND I
removed it using Synaptic, and for good measure I rebooted, at each
step I tried if I could enable "normal" or "extra" desktop effects,
but but none of these steps resulted in working desktop effects. Each
time I click on the "normal" or "extra" "radio button", I end up with
a message saying "Desktop-effects couldn't be enabled".

What's up with that?

p.s. I have also turned on the correct driver program for my ATI Rage
128 video card, by enabling the "screen and graphics" configuration
program, by enabling it with the menu editor. It an old 3D card, but
it should do the job. As an aside, does anybody know how to test
basic 3D (open-GL) functionality. Windows has a simple test program
for that, how about gOS?
