patricia, note that the driver on the CD that came with the scanner
contains only a driver written for Windows, nor one for Linux. The
lexmark 2500 is an "all in one", that is a combination of a scanner
and a printer. So when gOS tells you it has detected the lexmark 2500,
it has detected the printer, not the scanner part of it.

Just like the HP printer any scanner that Linux has a driver for
should be found automatically, and a driver for it should be switched
on immediately.

You should be able to scan using the program, which has a built in
scanner application. sane is NOT a "scanning program". SANE means
"Scanner Access Now Easy", and is an application programmers interface
for scanners:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scanner_Access_Now_Easy
built XSANE is a GNOME front-end for SANE, so that it works with
graphical desktops, and also acts like an application.
Xsane is also built into "The Gimp", (a photoshop like program) which
is how you would normally work with scanners.

If Xsane tells you that it cant find a scanner when you run it, that
probably means that there isn't a Linux scanner driver for that model
scanner when the Linux version was put together you are using.

Unfortunately at the moment I do not know how to help you further, but
you might try your luck at the ubuntu fora, the tips you get there
should work exactly the same for gOS. gOS 3.0 is compatible with
Ubuntu 8.04.
