Without having an opinion on any of the other aspects, Mozilla does need to do a much better job at supporting like-minded organizations. So having tiles that do that in itself seems like a good idea.
The rest of it I agree I would remain wary until knowing more details. Would we approach these companies and solicit them? "We like you, if you give us money we'll promote you..." just doesn't have a nice sound to it. I think the big problem is that things get announced and the process of how we got there isn't transparent. I'm sure people have thought of these things, it would be nice to have anticipated concerns addressed up front.
