As a bit of history, you should be aware that most Mozillians (including the
board) have known about Brendan’s Prop 8 stance since 2012, when a story was
published by the LA Times. It did not affect his position as CTO. It was
still known when he added the role of Senior VP of Engineering a little over a
year ago, with management over a huge portion of the organization. And it was,
of course, still well-known when he was appointed as CEO by the board. If we
were “governed by political correctness” then why would we give him even more
power and authority?

We made a choice based solely on merit, which led to a massive public backlash,
and an immense amount of personal abuse directed towards Brendan and his
beliefs. An immense amount of effort went into trying to support Brendan and
weather the storm. But it wasn’t getting better, it was getting worse, and
there was no good end in sight. Ultimately, Brendan made a personal choice to
step down for the good of both himself and Mozilla. This is a bitter pill for
all of us who believe in a truly inclusive Mozilla, and a true meritocracy.
The only consolation is that Brendan’s choice gives us a chance to rebuild and
continue on our mission.
