They were created specifically so that people with different views about topics such as marriage equality can work constructively together on the Mozilla mission, which is described here: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/manifesto/ Finally, note that "Mozilla" is a word with multiple meanings. There is the Mozilla corporation, which is what Brendan was the CEO of, and there is the wider Mozilla project, whose community consists of both employees of the corporation, as well as thousands of volunteers spread all over the world.
