Hugh There is no real problem running KDE programs under Gnome or vice versa. You could just as easily choose blackbox, ice or maybe even TWM. Gnumeric is good. Abiword is good and like Horst I use it in preference to OOo these days. I don't know any Gnome presentation software but there is always KPresent and Impress. The open source world almost always plays nice. HTH.
