Ian,

Valid question. It is going to hit the fan no matter what I do here !!

Comments I hear when comparing MS SQL with others are:
1/ Much like Oracle, it probably needs a DBA to maintain it. Others
like SQLBase, MySQL, and the like Don't.
2/ The SQL Implementation, while SQL 92 compliant, does have some
Microsoft Enhancements to the Language, making it more difficult to make
the "database Connector" module in code "Pluggable". In other words if
I'm writing a package to support multiple back-ends, it may require more
work with MS SQL.
3/ Repairing corruption, may not be as easy....not saying it is on
any DB file format......, but Skills and tools are not common for MS
SQL.
4/ Costs for Licensing......the usual arguments here. And granted
Microsoft licensing is a mine field. !

So I guess the feedback is more about supportability, and Business
requirements, and Application support for my 2 bobs worth.

The feature list is available anywhere, and all of the High end Db
Engines, pretty much do the same things.
I guess the thing is that MS SQL is capable of working at the small end
of town, and the very large end of town, and everywhere in between.

Regards
Barry

Barry,
everyone I've ever spoken to in the IT field has given me an unprintable
response when asked about Microsoft SQL server/MSDE, including those who
are otherwise Redmond loyalists.

I suspect MS-SQL has better integration with other microsoft products
(which is a circular argument). A genuine question: Are there any
*other* advantages over other products?
