Unfortunately a few weeks is all we would get - they would soon legislate to make the number compulsory.

by the time the legislation got up they would have a shitload of claims to sort out anyway

and in the meantime, if there was any eloquent representation in the medical fraternity, they could use the issue as leverage for exposure of a few sad truths behind the concept of "schedule fee"

i used to love explaining to patients before the rebate was 100% that the government defined what they considered a service was worth, and then unilaterally declared a 15% discount for themselves on payment if we did the majority of the billing procedure for them... in those days it would have been sensible to issue an account for 100% of the fee to every patient and back it up with the information that it wasn't an ama conspiracy, but the actual government defined minimum price of the service
