However, convincing most GPs about redundancy takes you as far as RAID

RAID just work for disk failure. It's much better to use Horst's
redundant array of inexpensive machines.
David,
I have no argument, in fact quite the opposite, I'm very impressed by
the approach. However, my point is that getting 'the rest', as Duncan
calls them, to invest in such things is very hard. The savvy will always
see your point, I just wish I had more of them to deal with.
You guys who are enthusiasts or professionals will please yourselves and
ensure very high levels of redundancy and security. I'm a third party in
a mostly commercial market trying to sell these things to people who
don't want to pay money for things they mostly don't understand.
The recent requirements to use the GPCG security manual and checklists
that are associated with B4H, the PIP IM&T tier changes and the new
accreditation standards have helped somewhat.
But the problem persists. I have just done two specs to give to
practices for servers with RAID1. I expect that at least one if not both
will come back to me saying things like:
"Dell has a PC for $899 with that CPU in it, why can't I use that
instead." or "My brother in law reckons you don't need all that stuff.
He says RAID and a UPS just cause problems, and besides, he says, hard
drives never die these days."
We are all searching for better, smarter ways, but at a price we can sell.
Greg
