This years computer graphic art competition in Germany (Spiegel) was won by an 
outsider artist by unanimous decision of the jury - who was gobsmacked when 
they learned that the much acclaimed work of art was created with the Gimp, 
of which nobody in the Jury ever heard before. Certainly stirred the CG 
community in Europe up a bit

While the user interface is more refined in  programs like Photoshop, the 
almost infinite power of the Gimp's scripting interface unleashes 
possibilities unheared of in commercial programs for those artisist with a 
bit of computer know how and willingness to learn.

I think Scribus is not quite in the same league yet, but it seems developing 
in huge leaps with a very active and ethusiastic community
