No extortion. That's what I offered when I finally found somebody considering
doing that day. He'll have to travel and will miss out on another lucrative
option elsewhere.

But I think it demonstrates my commitment towards providing a reliable medical
service for my area.

And it is because of this why it makes me so angry beyond control when even
that is not enough - just because some lowlife snotnosed bureaucrat clown
thinks he or she has to demonstrate their pseudo-importance by
procrastinating and delaying the simple administrative process of tagging the
locum with a provider number he is entitled to in any case.

Yesterday morning I returned from an ambulance transfer of a patient with
complete heart block. Got him to the base hospital safely. On the way back
our ambulance was diverted - Volvo had slammed with 110 km/h into a school
bus. So we help out and ferried some injured teens to the hospital in
Bellingen, and there I meet Bellingen's "veteran" GP - Dr Angus McClure.
First thing he tells me is that he is leaving, for good. Leaving medicine,
that is, going into farming. He loved medicine, but the madness of
bureaucracy got the better of him; he said he just could not stand it any
longer that every wannabe bureaucrat arsehole feels entitled to trample on
him and his nerves and making his work so difficult and taking out all the
joy of medicine; so he reckons he will be happier looking after cattle.

After my phone call from the HIC re locum provider number few hours later I
had a flashback seeing Dr McClures saddened face again, telling me how the
bureaucrats wrecked his professional joy. For a few seconds I indulged in
some ultra violent fantasies involving kebab spids and red hot charcoal at
some Canberra location, counted silently to ten, and then I kept seeing
patients until 20:30.
