I don't think that ensuring a new system can be cross platform when it is developed is an unrealistic expectation, particularly if these software houses want to be around for the next decade. I think they are just used to a point and click development environment like Visual Studio or the CA thing Frank uses, and they probably discuss this for all of a minute in their founding meetings - "What development environment should we use? I'm used to XYZ. OK, that means we'll be Windows only. No problem, 95% of the world is Windows only." They assume that the Linux, Mac and other non-MS communities are only early-adaptors and geeks. This is an old assumption that is becoming less true as time goes by. The release of Vista is the best thing to happen for these communities in ages, and that figure of 95% is already on a slippery downhill slope.
