Andrew

I have found the following problems recently with OO that everybody raves
about. I installed the latest version of OO wordprocessor on daughters PC.
With some documents the spell checker won't work. It tells you spell
checking complete when it hasn't done one. If you copy the document & paste
it into a blank new document, the word processor works. For some documents
it works perfectly 1st time. It seems it doesn't always access the spell
library - then it malfunctions. To stop arguments in my house I had to load
MS Word and since then she has had no problems at all !!!

UNSW doing some trail. They asked me if I had Excell. I said I have Excell
on one machne and OO version on the PC they will be using. They however
found a big data set only partially displays in OO version. They told me if
they open it in excell the whole dataset is displayed. They proved it to me
by showing me. Why OO does this I don't know - I'm sure some settings need
to be changed, but UNSW staff told me with excell it just works perfectly
every-time. They had same problems with other people using OO.

So I can no longer advise friends that OO is as good / better than MS. I
now tell them I have had problems & they can decide to get the free software
& take a chance.

What I was trying to get at I guess is.

Is this a forum for one eyed Linux zealots or is it a forum for the
discussion of aust medical apps ???

It gets a bit boring sometimes and I am not a person who uses windows
exclusively all day everyday.

Hell I'm even trying Firefox at the moment but it seems a little light on
feature wise.

The browsing history sucks.

The inability to add sites to a trusted zone is getting tedious.

But the speed is awesome, just like Netscape back when I was using OS/2 and
Win3.11

And I love my Linux based Snapgears aka Cyberguard firewalls and have done
for 6 years now.

I'm surprised there hasn't really been any mention of lack of tested medical
apps for Vista,

the upcoming release of BP accounting which will hopefully replace PS3
wholesale and rid us of its special way of adding up dollars.

Is everyone to scared to critise HCN anymore ?

Instead whenever someone mentions Windows or a Microsoft product they get
shouted down by Linux advocates telling them how much better Linux is.

Somewhat tedious and explains why I neglect to participate from time to
time.

Anyone else feel the same ?

Which rules out any doctors running the following medical software;

Medical Director

Practix

MSS Classic

Win32

Profile

Isn't there an Oracle or Postgres option here? NZ anyway so almost
irrelevant.

Medtech32

Interbase - Firebird - Linux is fine

Pracsoft

Win32

Totalcare

SQLBase - Linux is fine

Blue Chip

Win32

Shexie

No idea

Locum

Win32 (or is it still Win16 based)

RXMedical

Win32 although I believe they are working on getting free of MSSQL

Genie etc

Wash your mouth out - the Windows port of Genie was years after it's
inception, and was only done because it was easy, otherwise Paul probably
wouldn't have bothered.

So that seems to cover 90% plus of Australian doctors, about which we are
talking on this forum are we not ?

Not at all, I'd say around 50% are absolutely dependent on Win32.

So does your comment not sound a little out of place here Peter ?

I think not. You should know better than most that MSSQL is a pig to work
with compared to any of these other engines. The way forward need not be
encumbered by MS only, there is plenty of room for at least three operating
systems and more database engines, and they are all entitled to an advocate
or two.

Come on, how far does that ship have to sink before you'll look at an
alternative method of transport?

Peter.
