I have learned over the years that the ability of any new government
(when a different party is voted into power) to change things is much
less than either the public or the new government itself may have
expected. Almost all changes that a government proposes cause at least
one group in society, that feels that it will be disadvantaged or that
it will lose something, to object. Governments feel more confident to
implement changes if they feel that there is widespread support for the
change. This means that it is up to we citizens to tell the government
what we want, not just by how we vote at the election, but also by
communicating with our elected members after the election.
