Thanks for that Link Andrew.
I doesn't actually discuss the fact that there is such a thing as Half
Duplex or Full duplex connections, but it does give us a good look at
the technology.

However the point that Simon tried to get across, is that there is in
fact a feature of ADSL connections that I tried to highlight.

Easy to prove by the way. This is a little difficult to do in isolation,
but it obviously proves the point. Again, I will take your point here
that there could be many factors that will effect the download rate !!!
But this will be obvious.

Step 1) GO to a site, and download a large file. Wait for that to
finish. Document the download rate.
Step 2) Now find an FTP site and upload a large file or Send a large
email that will effectively tie up your Upload capacity on your link.
Step 3) While that upload is in happening, try and download a different
file from the same site that you used in step 1. To ensure it isn't
coming from any cache or the like.
Let me know if the download rate is the same or close to the same that
you wrote down in step 1.

I'm going to assume that your train of thought was that all ADSL
connections are full duplex, and I can only base that on your response
to my posting.
If that is the case, you should not have a big difference in the
download rate from Step 1 to Step 3.

Experience tells me that if you have a vanilla ADSL or SDSL connection,
your download performance will be significantly worse in step 3.

Examples of different Connections:
Westnet 512/512 SDSL = $79 / month (forget about the options)
Westnet 512/512 SHDSL = $309 / Month

Can you explain the difference in these plans Andrew ?
In reality, the second plan will enable upload and download at the same
speed at the same time.

I forgive you mate.....maybe you did have a bad hair day.

Hi Andrew,

Are you suggesting that an ADSL connection can function at peak
performance
in both the up and down directions simultaneously? As with dial-up modem
connections, I don't think this is the case (and I think that was all
Barry
was trying to say).

Cheers,
Simon
