Yes the difference is most likely this - The 512/512 plan @$79 is most likely thru Telstra exchange equipment. And the other is SHDSL using 2 pieces of copper exclusively, quite likely using the ISP's own exchange equipment. i.e. you cannot use voice/fax over it at all. See this from Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SHDSL
"G.SHDSL features symmetrical data rates from 192 kbit/s to 2,304 kbit/s of payload in 64 kbit/s increments for one pair and 384 kbit/s to 4,608 kbit/s in 128 kbit/s increments for two pair applications." So it is more expensive because of several things; 1. The ISP orders and installs the copper lines, i.e. you can't whack SHDSL on your existing fax line. 2. quite often they have to install l2 pairs of copper to achieve the speed or distance 3. the modems are not normal $100 netcomms they are specialised SHDSL jobbies. 4. The target service availability is higher than normal DSL. The reduced download speed whilst uploading has nothing to do with duplex and everything to do with TCPIP as timely suggested by Horst :) Try the same thing on a LAN and get the same result. Andrew.C <snip> Examples of different Connections: Westnet 512/512 SDSL = $79 / month (forget about the options) Westnet 512/512 SHDSL = $309 / Month Can you explain the difference in these plans Andrew ? In reality, the second plan will enable upload and download at the same speed at the same time. I forgive you mate.....maybe you did have a bad hair day. As with dial-up modem connections, I don't think this is the case (and I think that was all Barry was trying to say).
