Well Deepak,
In a gendered society, where men and women donot have equal privileges, it
is worthwhile to look at our 'gender'. What happens in gender neutral spaces
is that mostly it is men's spaces. As Devika pointed out, the crowded bus
itself is not just a free space, but a space where gender works. Also look
at other stratifications like class, caste, religion. Always the privileged
said that there is no caste, class, religion. But dalits had to assert their
caste identity. In my understanding casteism doesnt allow to raise the issue
of caste, it normalises the existing hierarchies.
Also I feel it is about representation, there is an 'every day gender' in
our talk, though we donot accept it.
