Here's my naming practice:
LaTeX file for a score: main-chant.tex
gabc files: chant1.gabc, chant2.gabc
temporary TeX files produced by autocompilation: chant1.gtex, chant2.gtex
If .gtex were to become the convention for the main LaTeX file
(main-chant.gtex), I would not follow it.

You would want to retain the files you get when you manually run
gregorio on a gabc file (as opposed to autocompiling them)?
Please help me to understand your use-case.

Since autocompile uses .gtex as the default extension, that is a reason
not to use the extension for scores. I've been writing scripts that
automatically delete all the .gtex files at the end of processing, on
the assumption that they are disposable.
