Moving this to the devel list since the innards of the TeX code is
probably not of interest to the most readers of gregorio-users.

I don't think it's related to the first syllable styling. I stripped
out the first syllable macros, leaving just the letters, and it still
won't render the hyphen. I think it has something to do with the
shifting code that was introduced to make the first notes line up, but
I'm not completely sure.
An interesting thing is that putting <v>kern-1cm{}</v> in the front of
the second syllable causes the hyphen to show up, first syllable styling
or not. Of course, the hyphen shows up in the wrong place (it overlaps
with the first letter), but it's a sign of some weird interaction here.
Tangentially, while testing this, I found a bug in the first letter
centering code (it's including the initial when it shouldn't).
I won't have time to look at this further until late Sunday night at the
earliest. The alignment code (with the huge comment) is something I
don't completely understand, so this may take some time. Any hints are
welcome.
I'll also work on the first letter centering problem in the near future.
