I think that is an excellent idea. For Lion, all one really needs is TexLive 
2011 from MacTex and Xcode installed via the App store.

Also, as you correctly note, /usr/local is write protected (as it should be for 
security reasons) and a sudo is required before the make install, ./install.py 
and updmap.
