Technically speaking, it's very possible to install Growl, or anything else, with any sort of installer. Hence my point about no way to enforce it.

Our license is pretty open. Take a look at it here:

http://growl.info/documentation/developer/bsd-license.txt

So for instance with Adobe, they installed Growl's prefpane. This means it doesn't meet condition 1. However, that meets condition 2, and of course condition 3.

Growl itself includes the requirements in condition 2. So they met all requirements.

We're not interested in suing people who distribute Growl. We are interested in informing them of how we like things to be done. Adobe is going to change their installer due to feedback from this community, and their own community. Which is all we need them to do to turn this from a somewhat bad thing, to a really good thing.

so any software company can bundle other apps and install them without
permission of the other software company? To me it doesn't sound
right and one would think that to be something you could sue over if
desired. I mean, not that Adobe would do so, but if a malicious
software did so it would by proxy cast that negativity upon
Growl......kinda like what the original poster experienced. Just
sayin... If such a statement were at least included in the terms of
use policy/agreement, then users could be directed to that statement,
etc.

Should it be made a policy by Growl so that if it is included in a
software install, such as in the subject of this topic, then it must
be made a selectable option in the install process? Granted I haven't
installed CS5 yet so I don't know if it is an option or not. Either
way, Adobe should have gotten permission and paid rights to Growl and
should have made it an option during install.

The landing page for Google Groups allows for an introductory
block, labeled Home, that could be used to intercept frustrated
users. There could be a link there titled, `Where did Growl come
from?!`, which would take the user somewhere explaining the
different ways Growl can show up on their Mac, along with removal
instructions, if necessary.

Very good idea. I'll add a item to the FAQ (been meaning to do that
already) and a link to it in the introduction. Thank you.
