Not doing so is not possible.

We speak, and VoiceOver stops speaking when we do so. There is nothing we can 
do about that.

I believe the last time we talked about this, we offered to create a 
stop-speaking hot key. That item remains in our ticket database, so it hasn't 
been lost:
