Of course, it may be a bit inconvenient to be the guinea pig app for the dist revival but what the hell? And it's fortunate that someone shows up wanting to cross-compile for a peculiar OS at this stage when metaconfig is going to be worked on anyway. Those who have seen where Raphael has taken gtkg will have no trouble believing he can do interesting things with metaconfig. I do look forward to the day when Raphael's new Dist is uploaded to dist.sf.net so we can all take a look at it but I'm quite willing to be patient, considering that he is currently juggling family, job and an MBA (and still manages to generate flurries of gtkg commits somehow.) We are in no position to make demands of any of the developers. If they happen to be interested in the things we want to see, then we're lucky that's all. On the other hand, I believe they're quite willing to quote you their fee schedules if you want to make sure they're interested ;>) But as it happens, Raphael IS interested in making gtkg work with MingW and here's Kuhlmann available to have his brain picked about it, so if they work together it's going to happen. There's nothing sacred about autoconf. It's been quite popular for about 5 years and the standard for perhaps 3, but lots of people are looking for something better. See " Stop the autoconf insanity! Why we need a new build system.": http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/889/ Not that I don't appreciate autoconf as a user - can't remember the last time I had to wrestle an imake file into submission. But let's not get all dogmatic about it. Who knows, perhaps metaconfig will be the standard in another five years and we can mock the kids who complain about it, "Ha, when I was your age, all we had was Autoconf! Yep, I remember having many discussions about metaconfig with ram, himself, back in the day." And the kids will look at us with awe and think, "why doesn't that old fart shut up about that ancient history. That is, like, sooo 32 bit!" -- Murphy ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email sponsored by: ApacheCon 2003, 16-19 November in Las Vegas.
